[Saloon-lovers] 65 MK10 4.2 Steering Pump Rebuild

This is one of those projects that you start out to fix one
thing and you end up opening a can of worms. It started out
replacing the steering box and then other item were calling
me. The pump after 50 years was leaking at every seal on the
resavore. I called the parts suppler that I’ve been using
and they wanted $60 for the external seal kit. Remembering
that this is a Saginaw pump that GM used in the 60’s and the
early 70’s I made a trip to my local Car-quest parts house.
Looked up a 1972 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup and found a kit. The
kit is a complete seal kit and even has pump shaft bushing.
All this for $14. The kit number is a Powercraft 7910. After
taking lots of pictures I removed the resavore and every
seal was brittle. Took this time to clean and inspect the
pump. Also cleaned the small screen on the end of the flow
control valve. To install the resavore I used 2 3/8-18 x 2’’
bolts with nuts threaded to the hex and washers as a bearing
surface on the resavore. These were screwed into the pump
mounting holes about 1/3 of the way. The nut were tuned down
equally until the resavore was seated. My pump had a washer
between the pump and the mounting bracket.–
