I found that there was a pool of gasoline in the depression
on the tank top. The terminal for the fuel gauge and that
for the earth were immersed in the pool. (I wiped out the
pool at once.) Can this matter be the reason why the fuel
meter doesn’t function now?

Hi,
Sorry, not sure without any photos, but one possibility
would be, that since the seal for the fuel gauge sender is
made of cork, that it may have been dry and leaked in case
the tank was filled to the top of the fuel filler neck.
Otherwise there should be nothing to lead fuel there, as
the fuel pump intake is inside the fuel tank sump. Or
perhaps a perished fuel filler hose beween the tank and
the filler box? Mine was in pretty bad shape and I
replaced it with a new heavy duty fuel hose since it is
100% hidden.
Cheers,

Jaguarer,
The reason the fuel gauge/meter does not work is the broken
fuse holder on the voltage regulator. As a short term fix
until the regulator is replaced you could move the wires
from the A4 terminal on the regulator to the A3 terminal
but be sure to mark them so that when you do replace
regulator the will then be protected by the fuse.

Definitely 99 percent certain the reason for the pool of
fuel is one or both of the two seals on the sending unit
have failed.
The larger round seal with 6 screw holes was originally
made of cork.
The smaller rectangular seal with 4 screw holes was
originally made of paper.
Both seals are now available made of neoprene rubber from
Moss Motors and other Jaguar parts sources, listed under
XK120 parts.
The other small possibility is one of the two electrical
terminals has a leak.
Be sure your flange with the 6 screw holes is not distorted
from over-tightening of the screws.
If your sealing surfaces are in good condition you should
not need any liquid or paste sealant.–

Correction, Moss Motors has the gasket set 293-401 made of
viton rubber listed under MGTC parts.
Also under MGTC parts is the original screw set 323-418.
You will need to check if you have the original BSF thread
screws or some other replacements.
