In reply to a message from Elephant sent Thu 29 Jan 2015:
not with a DG250, but in particular another tranny, which
was a Clark 5 speed truck gearbox & transfer case, these had
leather shaft seals and are 70+ years old.
here is the advice I received from several hugely
experienced sources the way to minimise leakage in those &
other aged transmissions was to;
A) attend to worn shafts with Speedy Sleeves
(over many years the seal wears a track in the shaft)
B) If at all possible, obtain ‘‘modern’’ seals of same size
from the bearing shop…the only was is to measure each one
and cross check. They offer superior sealing characteristics.
As many seals are a standard size, sometimes you may have an
option such as ‘‘double-lip viton’’ which cost a lot more
This is time consuming, sometimes they are available, some
not. You need shaft OD, bore ID, seal thickness
Identify the location of each leak with talcum powder or
similar.
Over the years of reading JL, leaking DG250s seems a
persistent complaint. My not yet rebuilt BW8 leaks too
For 2800, I would hopefully expect no leaks, and no excuses
either, presume the above issues would have been addressed
at that price
I only deal with tranny shops were the proprietor has grey
hair and been in business 30+ years, and is familiar with
the tranny he is to rebuild, I would ask them what they did
to prevent leaks, other than put it back together with a
‘‘seal & gasket kit’’
If a rebuilder cannot answer those sort of questions, they
should not be contracted to do the job imo–
The original message included these comments:
I have had my gearbox rebuilt; prior to the rebuild it was
leaking(surprise). After 2 attempts by 2 separate
rebuilders it is still leaking at various points. Has
anybody had the same experience and what did they do?
