[Saloon-lovers] Gearbox cover abnormalities?

Hi folks,
Removed my engine/gearbox/overdrive from my 64 MK2 yesterday. I have a sheet metal split on the LH side above the opening for the gearbox near the firewall, and a strange perfectly round “patch” on the RH side. Not knowing what is “normal” or “standard,” I don’t know what to make of these.

The circular cutout is to allow access to the starter motor mounting bolt,
as described on page P.30. I don’t know about the split.
