[Saloon-lovers] How are these lamps of MKV are called in English?

Hello,

Please tell me how the lamps on the both front wheels of
MKV below are called in English. Traffocators or side lamps?

Hi,

Very hard to know which lamps you mean (or lights) from
the photos, but:

The ‘‘semafores’’ or wing shaped things with a light in them
that would pop up from the B-pillar (or side of a DHC
body) were what the factory called trafficators. (TRF
indicator lamp on the MKV dash, also on cars that had no
trafficators, but directional flashing lights, like my DHC
from July 1950, #647194)

The light switch on the dash shows (IIRC) O = Off, S =
Side lights and H = Head lights

The Fog lamps only work when the switch is in the S
position.

The headlights have the low (main) beam (dipped) and high
(main) beam which also has an indicating light on the
speedometer (bottom of the dial) operated by the foot
switch on the scuttle.

So I take it you mean the sidelight housings on the top of
the front wings?

In most cars they are just sidelights and they also remain
on when the headlamps are on. On cars with flashing
indicators instead of trafficators, the front (and rear)
sidelights also operate as flashing indicators with a dual
filament bulb, 5/20W or modern substitute 5/21W.

Cheers,

Pekka T. - 647194

I’m learning a lot from this thread. Probably the most important thing I
learned is that I REALLY do not want to try to register an antique car in
Japan.

Dear Mr. Pekka T. & Mr. Mike Eck,

Thank you for the information.

I now knew that I meant the ‘‘side lamps’’ at the last question.

And now I have a further question about the side lamps.

I will ask the question anew.

MIke

I think Mr Toyota and Mr Nissan and friends don’t want people
registering old cars either.–

What do they do for a Toyopet or a Datsun?
Is there no special license for antique cars in Japan?–
