[Saloon-lovers] Lifting Daimler V8 engine into mark 2

I am about to install the engine and Manual/OD box into my Daimler.
The car and engine came separately so I do not know how it was
removed. I have searched the threads which show a consensus on mark
2s for dropping the suspension and taking engine/trans out of the
bottom. Unfortunately, this cannot be done with the V8 because it
is too wide . I have become really rather nervous about this
because of the height of lift required to enable the very long
apparatus to enter the engine bay and then go into the gearbox
tunnel . I have a fairly ordinary engine crane, and one of the 2
feet long screw type load levellers, and I am also able to tilt the
nose of the car heavily nose down ( rear wheels centres 3 feet off
the ground) using my hydraulic lift but even so it all looks a very
tight squeeze. All advice/suggestions/experience gratefully
received–

Christopher, I have not done this but you did ask so anyway. The
Buick/Olds 215 eng gearbox that I am familiar with ( Rover to you
blokes) weighs about 550 lbs so total is less than an XK engine
alone. This is meant to be reassuring. Now the advice. Do a dry
run/ test of lifting the eng/gearbox to the height required NOT
OVER THE CAR and see if the tilt is enough and if your crane (
cherry picker ) is stable. Enlist some strong friends. Pete–

peter : thanks ; the Olds/Rover is both lighter and less bulky than
the Daimler V8, which is about 150 lbs lighter than an XK. The
problem is more one of length, with the engine being only 25 inches
long, but the box and o/d unit and a very long tailpiece being no
less than 33 inches long. So it is height available which is the
problem , and a very tight squeeze into the 35 inch long aperture
in the car! Thanks for the advice which I shall follow–

Nose down? I’d rather put the nose up a foot!
