Can someone tell me if Lucas tripod headlights were ever used as
OEM or common replacements on Mk2s or earlier Jaguar saloons, and
what year they were first introduced? I am thinking of installing
a pair on my 67 MK2 and am wondering it they would be out of place
in this application.–

Looking at period advertisements, I see that XK120s and MKVIIs used tripod
headlamps. The XK140 and XK150, as well as the MKVIII used “J” dot lamps,
with the letter “J” on a black circle in the middle of the lens. The MK1s
and MK2s are shown with standard sealed beams with no decoration.
If you want something different, you might try flat face lamps. I think
they look pretty nice.

Hi Phil,
Tri-Bar headlights were never used on the saloons and were not normal
replacements. I installed a set on my S-type when I went to halogen bulbs. I
like the looks of the flat glass verses the traditional curved glass of the
OEM sealed beams. I added a couple of links so you can see what they look
like installed. Earlier saloons such as the MKIX used a flat glassed “J”
lens with replaceable bulbs, I had a set of those installed prior to the
tri-bar bulbs.

My $.02:
It depends on whether you want to go with the as-delivered look, the period
look, etc.
Flat-faced headlights are apparently what early Mk2’s were delivered with in
the UK. There was a Lucas separate-bulb style with a more domed look that
is listed in the parts book, with sealed beam type listed for U.S. export.
Tripod styles were from earlier years and could be considered period style.
It all depends on your own taste, unless you are competing at a show. Then
you ought to use one of the styles that is listed in the parts book to be
able to defend authenticity. Personally I like the flat look, so I found a
pair of halogens that work well on my driver Mk2.

They were much earlier than that, but I have a pair of the flat glass
tripod lamps in my '59 Mary IX and I think they really enhance the
appearance of the car (even if they are not correct). I believe the were
first used on the 1949 XK120.

Followed closely by the Mark VII, however they were discontinued by
the Mark VIII as it and the Mark IX used ‘J-Lights’.
Tribar style lights go back well before WWII but I don’t have an exact date.

In reply to a message from Phil_W sent Thu 24 Jul 2003:
The early small saloons used a flat faced lamp that is essentially
a J lamp without the J. The pattern in the glass is the same. US
specification cars generally had F700 sealed beams. I am going to
put Lucas PLs in my '63 Mark 2 for no better reason then I have an
NOS set laying around and I like them. I can use a halogen bulb
too, and hopefully the heat won’t nuke the reflectors. Concours
isn’t a concern with this car.

Lucas tri-pod (tri-bar) and PL 700 headlights were standard replacement
items at the time the Mk2 was produced. In fact, I have the pair of PL’s in
my Mk2 that I bought new off the shelf in the early 70’s. Picture of how
they look on a Mk2 at: http://www.oldirish.com/cars/67/67k.jpg
I am not sure about the concours deduction Dr. Gregory mentioned in his
post. Ch. VI B3 of the JCNA Concours Rule Book speaks to certain items as
having been accepted as authentic, even though they may not be factory
installed. Tri-bar headlamps are one of the items mentioned. However, in
reading the paragraph I could read it a couple of different ways. I have
not had any deductions for them in the past. I guess I will seek further
clarification before I venture up to Vancouver next month. ;}
