[Saloon-lovers] Mark V switchblade

H:

I saw my first Mark V Saloon today and WOW!!

I have one question though. What is that switchblade thing
sticking out of the side door trim?

Is there one on both sides?

The heck the new Secret Service, anti-terriost vehicle.
Just pull up in to the da’hood with this baby and release
those blades.

Whack!!

You could slice and dice someone with them.

Just kidding.

I noticed the car has seatbelts, although hidden. Does this
not take away from the ‘‘classic’’ classification?

They are trafficators that serve as turn signals. They were used before flashers were invented.

As noted, they are called trafficators. I've seen

manual ones (little lever on the inside), vacum actuated
ones, and electrical ones. I wouldn’t be surprised if
Citroen had used hydraulic ones at some point.
There is fellow at the car jumble sales who only sells
and restores trafficators - that is all he does. Can you
imagine a small truck filled with nothing but trafficators?
I get such a kick out of him that I make a point of visiting
his stand.

Regarding the seatbelts, unless you can afford a truck

to transport your vehicle they are a damn fine idea. Here
in Switzerland ‘Classic’ designation (by the DMV) is purely
based on age, presuming that the car is original.

I like my idea better.

Switchblades!

Hydraulic ones at that. Now that is really cool!

If you forget to retract one, you’d make someone’s day.

Kidding aside, to drive one in modern day traffic, would you
not have to install modern turn signals?

I can see it now, flashing turn signal LED’s like on the new
trucks, mounted on these puppies.

Tony,
Actually, I have seen a few cars with magnetically
mounted turn signal/brake lamps attached to the rear in the
usual location. Seeing as nobody knows what the handsignals
mean anymore, and they certainly aren’t looking where the
trafficators are mounted (while they tailgate), some sort of
signal system makes sense. The law here does not require
retrofitting though.
One of this winters projects for the Mk II is to equip
it with a hazard lamp system. After ignoring them on ebay
for 2 years, they’re not appearing anymore once I need one!

Citroen had a string from the one side ‘‘trafficator’’ to the other
and you reached over your head to pull it a couple times when you
wanted to turn. Early models, 2cv, from the 50’s, anyway.
