[Saloon-lovers] Mk 2 boot latch opening while driving

The trunk (boot) on my Mk 2 has a tendency to open by itself when I go over
a bump in the road, sometimes even when locked!. I had tried adjusting the
position of the catch on the lid to fix this but no with effect. It has
been awhile since I looked at it because I hadn’t been driving the car much.
( After replacing the brake booster with an after market item I am driving
it again. )

Anyone else have this problem? How should I fix it?

BTW- I’ll be replacing the rear shocks soon although I don’t think the’re
entirely responsible for the latch problem.
Thanks,

Frank

My 340 has the same problem, I bought a new seal and the seal seams to be
too big…
I think my lock might be just worn out as well. I just gave up on it until
now.
Looking for experience…

Frank,

You are suffering from a design weakness that plagued early Mark 2s. Thorley’s
book referred to a revised latch a bit later in production. My 1962 popped
open on a rough road only once. I adjusted the catch and it seemed to work.
You might think about trying a replacement after market latch.

Old thread but I will reply all the same…I wish I had this problem (LOL)… I cannot get my boot to open. Lock turns, keys work, not seized but still won’t open…sigh!

Perhaps your Mother-in-law has figured out how to pop the latch from the inside.

Ha ha, if she’s still breathing. I am aware of the popping open problem, not sure how you can cure the reverse. Try puting a dowel or similar on the button and give it a whack with a mallet perhaps? Sharp shock and might cause the button to travel a fraction further than it otherwise might? Otherwise surgery might be the only option, preferably avoided.

If it’s simply a case that the button doesn’t go in far enough for the hook to clear the latch, pressing the button in as far as you can then pulling the bottom edge of the boot (trunk) away from the car body, or pushing it in towards the car body might do the trick.

I don’t she has enough breath left in her now to do that…LOL

Tried that too…I suspect it might be a case of removing the button and replacement…

I was having trouble getting mine to latch so I bought a replacement from Barret. No luck with that one either. So I got the bright idea to set my phone on video record and set it up in the trunk pointed at the latch. Worked a treat as they say in the UK. Helped me figure out how to cure the issue!
