[Saloon-lovers] MK I coupe prototype/mock-up pictures?

Hi Jag lovers,
I’m a new proud owner of a 1959 MKI 3,4 MOD. I have been
dreaming of restoring it as the MK I coupe Sir Lyons was
planning for.

The project was not finished, only a life size mock-up was
made (as for all projects)… I only have a front/side
picture and can’t find anything else on the Internet. The
pic I have is this:

Jyri from Finland, whose site this picture is at, says that
there are several others in some Jag books, only he can’t
remember which books.

Would be very grateful if anyone can point me in the right
direction or send any links and/or phooties to @Matej

Feel free to comment on the idea and/or the technical side
of things as well. My reasoning (and I’m not saying I’ll do
it) is that there are lots of MKI’s, a few ‘‘racing’’ or
‘‘Coombs’’ cars, but not this one, for obvious reasons, OK it
wouldn’t be a restoration of an original vehicle, not even a
rebuild of a different body type to an existing coupe, but I
still think it would be great, turn heads and will be a
tribute to Jag and Lyons

Thank you Matt in Czech Republic–

Jyri from Finland, whose site this picture is at, says that

Paul Skilletter’s “Jaguar Saloon Cars” has that same picture, plus a view from
the rear.

I’ve put them online for you at:
http://picasaweb.google.com/diego.montefusco/Jaguar24TwoDoorCoupeMockUp

not having a scanner, this is the best I could do with my camera and please let
me know when you downloaded them, so I can remove them… I took them at the
highest resolution I could (2048x1536) and you need to click on the “Download
Photo” link to get them at THAT resolution…

the captions says:

“This very sleek two-door coupe design was played with by Jaguar in the early
fifties - styling lent heavily on the 2.4 saloon, but it may have been intended
for the XK sports car chassis (note the 16-inch wheels)”

Feel free to comment on the idea and/or the technical side of
things as well.

I quite frankly love the idea of building a vehicle that didn’t make into
production (I am toying with that idea as well, although it would be a
motorcycle, the prototype of the 1972 Ducati 750GT), but if the caption is
right, you may be facing a bigger project than originally thought… indeed the
wheelbase seems shorter than the 108" of the MkI, more like the 102" of the
XK120…

good luck and let us know if you find more pics!

cheers

diego

Matej,

Your message sent me to my old archive of Jaguar books. Paul Skilleter’s
“Jaguar Saloon Cars” as published in 1980 contains the picture you included
in your message as well as a rear view of that same vehicle.

Hello MateJ,

For pictures, you might first start with Tony Bailey, he has a very
extensive collection of early and rare models. tony@jag-lovers.org

For other insights into the car, a great resource would be Nigel Thorley
nigel.thorley@btinternet.com.

Good luck on your project!

In reply to a message from David G. McKay sent Tue 5 Feb 2008:

Thanks, the book is in mail - have been for a week now, the
joys of ordering to Czech Republic…

Diego sent the pictures, looks interesting, we can’t agree
if the wheelbase was shortened or not, FIY and anyone
else’s, here’s another, a convertible this time, scroll down
to MKI convertible:

I’m trying to contact the owner as they should have some
idea on what’s involved

Thanks, I have these pics now, anyone knows of any others or
has any more info/thoughts?
