‘‘Pull upwards on the steering wheel to remove it from the splines’’,
says Mr Haynes. Ha, ha, very droll. Does anyone have any tips for
getting it off without shattering the plastic or using a 12 ton
puller ? Maybe loose the locknut and use the wheel as its own slide
hammer ?
Sorry to be raising all these topics lately but with March being
always a quiet month as regards work, I seem to be having a burst
of energy and doing lots of little jobs to the 3.4. The steering
wheel has always irritated by the centre bar being about 30 deg.
out.
Quite pleased with today’s job, though. Fitted a Pioneer stereo/cd
of the face-off variety which not surprisingly sounds a million
times better than the 40 year old Blaupunkt. But the neat thing is
that I’ve used the front panel of an old dead HMV push-button valve
set that was lying around (and coincidentally the same one as
appears in the Mk II brochure) to sit in the aperture when the
radio’s not in use. You have to look pretty closely to spot the
trick !
Thanks again to those who responded to my brake fluid warning
wiring query, got that sorted today as well.
Regards to all,–

P.S. When I say aperture, I mean the face-off aperture, not the
whole radio aperture !–

If it’s like the Mark IX wheel, there are a couple of semi-circular
collets at the forward end of the hub; they fit against a taper below the
threads of the column. Have you tried putting the center nut back on
(loosely) to protect the threads on the column, and giving the end a sharp
knock while putting tension on the wheel with your other two arms? Once the
collets have loosened slightly on the taper, the wheel should come off
pretty easily.
If it's not like the Mark IX, and there are no collets, forget
everything I have said.
