[Saloon-lovers] Mk10 Conv

Me again. I paged through the saloons site and saw a picture of a Mk10
convertible…? Was there actually a convertible made?

On closer inspection of the photo I noticed the background being very
vague where the roof should have been …! Can anyone please tell me
whether this photo is authentic, it certainly doesn’t look that way.

Just curious.

Hi Riann Hattingh & all – Riann, Jaguar NEVER produced a convertible in
the Mk X/420G – however, Nigel Thorley’s JAGUAR MARK VII TO 420G - THE
COMPLETE COMPANION, p/140, says: “In the late 1970s Graig Hinton from
Hinckley in the Midlands (well known for his Jaguar racing exploits in both
the UK and the USA, but now sadly passed on) came up with the idea of
turning the Mark X/420G into a true convertible. He tried many
experiments, some of which looked hideous. But by the early 1980s
development had enabled Graig to come up with a viable conversion. The
conversion meant cutting off the roof and window frames, welding up the
rear doors and adding extra structural strength to the sill and underfloor
areas. New pillarless windows were fitted (either manually or electrically
operated) although the rear wind-down quarter windows had to be manually
operated due to a lack of space to fit electric mechanisms. The specially
constructed hood and frame, however, were electrically driven, with giant
rams from the Rolls-Royce Corniche. Unfortunately, quite a few of the
dozen or cars produced did not feature a proper hood as this development
came late in the production of the cars. The cars produced were based on
Mark X and 420G shells and were finished in various colours such as white,
pastel blue, two-tone blue, and two-tone green, most being exported to
Europe and the USA.”

Nigel’s photo of a Graig Hinton car shows a white 420G, appearing totally
original EXCEPT for the hood. I hope this bit of documented history helps

I’ve only just come across this question, and yes there really were convertible mark mk10 s. My dad worked with graig on the cars . And when I married in 1978 graig and his sons both drove the mk10s as my wedding cars . Think they were shipped to the states? But not before my “big day” . So photos not photoshopped, I was lucky to have such amazing cars and lovely chauffeurs

I once saw, circa 1988, a bright red Mark 10 convertible driving down Lincoln Blvd in Venice California so that was my proof they really did exist. May have also seen this car (or another like it) for sale in the JCNA magazine Jaguar Journal a number of years ago
