[Saloon-lovers] Mk2 generator and voltage regulator update

Congratulations! It will be interesting to find out what you discover about
your old generator.

The generator light went out around 700 RPM and at slightly higher RPMs
the Ampmeter showed it was charging! The Ampmeter needle flickered a bit
at
first but got more steady as the engine warmed up.

I buttoned it all up and came in the house with a big smile.

If I have time during the week I’ll open up the first generator and look
for
soldier droplets or any other sign that it might have damage.

Here is the latest on my Mk2’s charging system problem.

The Lucas C45 PVS6 was not creating much (almost nothing) voltage when with
the wires disconected and the D and F terminals jumped together and engine
running.

I flashed the F terminal to the battery hot side (negative) and still no
voltage with engine running.

Generator from ebay arrived the middle of last week and I was able to get
100-200mV just spinning the pulley by hand. I swapped the fan (ebay one was
bent) and cleaned the commutator with 400 grit sand paper and sprayed just
that end with brake cleaner. The brushes looked the same length as new so I
reassembled it and put it on the car. I jumped the D and F terminals,
started the engine and watched the voltage with the engine running. It went
right up to -16V with engine speed before I let off the gas. I flashed the
F terminal as before because I noticed the polarity was wrong. Next I
reattached the wires and started the engine again.
