[Saloon-lovers] Mk2 radio

Hi!

This is my first time writing to the list. I=B4ve been a subscriber =
since I made an agreemen in september to buy a 1965 3.8 Mk2 automatic =
1st of may this year - my first Jaguar!! I=B4ve been driving it a few =
times before the final takeover, and I=B4m having difficulties getting =
out of it again… This is the closest thing to heaven as you can get. =
It=B4s in perfect condition and restored completely to =B465 standard. =
Except for one thing: the radio is a 1988 Philips which of course is =
completely unacceptable!! Can anyone tell me if it was born with a =
certain radio or, if not, there was a radio that used to be installed in =
this type of car at the time. Being born in 1967 I havent really got any =
personal preferences…

Peter,

Chances are it would have been a Radiomobile AM/SW. I don’t know the model
for a Mark 2, so hopefully someone can run with it from here.

I had a Blaupunkt (AM only) in mine that I think was original (the PO
swears it is, but he also said some other things about the car that makes me
doubt his integrity)

Does anyone have a radio(positive earth) for sale
preferably for a Mk2. I am tired of the fires using a
converter–

The radio in my car (original, positive earth) is a Smiths
Radiomobile 980 and very good it is too, apart from the
shortage of stations available now. Later this week I will
take delivery of a device for evaluation that will allow any
output via a 3.5mm jack (headphone output on most iphones,
phones, mp3 players, DAB radios etc) to 'tap in to the
aerial lead and play via the radio without altering the
radio in any way. This is not a wireless modulator but a
plug in straight to the aerial lead and on AM (MW in the UK)
is tuned to the 10 position on the dial (1000 khz) or 300
metres medium wave for Ukanians. I will install and write up
a report if youre interested? Also means you can hear your
phone via the radio speaker so if speakerphone on your phone
is good enough, hands free phone usage as well.

If you swap cars or radios should be easy enough to swap
this over too.–

In reply to a message from Elephant sent Sat 28 May 2016:

Yes.

Some radios of this period were dual polarity, with a switch
or plug on the rear that could be thrown / placed as
appropriate. The Radiomobile in my car does not have this
option although I have read of de-soldering / re-soldering
the transformer connections to change polarity; not
something I would like to try.

The modulator I will be fitting comes in three versions;

  1. AM (MW in UK)for negative earth
  2. AM (MW in UK) for positive earth
  3. FM for negative earth.

I am waiting on delivery for the version two above, and will
report as soon as I have it fitted.

All the best,–
