Have my '62 Mk2 project started and while I have the engine
out for the gearbox swap and other maintenance activities I
plan on refreshing and possibly upgrading some of the aged
wiring in the engine bay. My car is wired so that the
starter motor will engage and turn over the engine even
with the ignition in off position. Is this standard wiring
procedure on these cars? I’ve looked at the wiring diagram
in the service manual but cannot tell whether this is
correct.

Tom,
The start button on the dash should only operate the starter
if the ignition switch is ‘‘On’’, but the button on the solenoid
will turn the engine regardless of the position of the ignition
switch.

Thanks Mike,
I didn’t doubt you but did check the wiring diagram and you
are quite right; never made sense to me to be able to turn
over without ignition on but I presumed this was the way it
was meant to be. I will not change it now; after 16 years of
usually happy driving best left well alone. Curious how two
cars have been altered in this way though.
Cheers–

It is not supposed to do that. The white wire on the starter push was
originally connected to the ignition switch.
