[Saloon-lovers] More MKI Exhaust

Speaking of MKI exhaust, Here are a few more questions.

Last fall I installed a 3.4 L engine wich according to the serial nos.
originally came from a MKVII. This replaced the chevy 6 that the car
came to me with. The current exhaust is a single pipe system of
questionable origin. I’d like to replace it with the proper dual pipe
system. I have found sources of stainless steel systems for MK and MKII
but none for standard steel systems for the MKI. Are they available?
What is/are the differences between the MkI and MKII exhaust systems?
One other possible wrinkle. I had to use a copper/asbestos type gasket,
which I found in the head gasket set, between the exhaust manifold and
down pipe I instead of what the catalog shows to be a doughnut type for
MKIIs. The doughnut type did not fit in the manifold. Is this correct
for earlier saloons/engines?

Thanks

I can’t answer the doughnut question for sure, but I think the doughnuts are
available. As far as the exhaust goes, the only obvious difference is that
the tail pipes behind the muffler run straight back to the left side of the
car on the Mark 2 – there’s even a little cutout in the bodywork for them,
I believe. On the Mark 1, the tail pipes cross over to the right side of the
car and exhaust there. That’s the obvious difference.

The stainless systems sound different, a bit tinny, and I didn’t want that.
Besides, in dry Arizona, if I bring the car to operating temps everytime I
take it out, the exhaust system should outlast me. So, I searched for mild
steel. I discovered there are no mild steel exhaust systems sold for the
Mark 1, in fact, there are no mild steel mufflers available.

I found some mild steel exhaust systems for the Mark 2, but I wasn’t sure if
they’d fit. I knew the tail pipe was different, but I didn’t know about the
muffler. It was a different part number so I hesitated.

I was considering a stainless muffler and custom bent mild steel pipes for
my Mark 1, but my restoration went so slowly that before I had to make the
decision, I found someone who had some NOS Mark 2 mufflers. For the price of
$25 each, I figured I could gamble on them not fitting. By all measurements,
it looks like they will fit, but it was then that I discovered the
difference.

You have to wonder why Jaguar did this, the mufflers are different. Not
the muffler cases themselves, but the inlet and outlet pipes. In both cars,
the mufflers are tied together side-by-side, with the mufflers standing wide
dimension vertically. There is a little Y-shaped mount at the top front, and
three bars welded across the two mufflers at the top and bottom rear and
bottom front. (If you don’t have a manual, get one – you’ll need the
pictures to explain this to the muffler shop.) These mufflers tuck up in a
cavity under the rear seat. On the Mark 1, the inlet and outlet pipes do a
little zig-zag down from each end of the muffler to the pipes, keeping the
ground clearance between the bottom of the muffler in line with the bottom
of the pipes. On the Mark 2, if I recall correctly (someone correct me if
I’m wrong), the same zig-zag occurs, but in this case it is on the pipe and
the mufflers have much shorter ends on them.

Mark 2 pipes of mild steel might fit from the engine to the mufflers, but
you’d still have to have the pipes custom bent from the muffler back, to add
the drop from the muffler.

I hope that makes sense.

Mark,

The MK-I exhaust headers use the doughnut gasket. I’m not sure about the
MK-VII, but the XK150 of the same time used a “flat flange” and thus a flat
gasket.

Mk1 muffler cross-section. Far from being a straight-through, which are easier available now.
Inlet on the left. Box length is 66cm, oval is 11x18cm. Now I need a replacement. And this is/was the better one of the two

MkVII used a flat gasket.
