This may sound stupid - but where exactly does the sping clip go in
the oil filter of my MKII? I have just removed the filter, for the
first time since I got the car a few weeks ago, only to find that
there are no innards other than the filter. I will be ordering new
parts but cannot seem to find anything that shows, or tells, me the
position of the spring clip on the bolt. I am assuming that it goes
on the filter side of the pressure plate to provide some form of
pre-load on the spring.
Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.–

I’m glad you discovered your lack of filtration sooner rather than later.
The clip is actually not necessary to the operation of the filter, but it
helps keep the bolt, spring and pressure plate together with the canister
when you unscrew the bolt. It goes on the filter side of the pressure
plate.

Many thanks, I kind of thought that but wasn’t sure. It must be
about 30 years since I worked on a car like this and I am afraid my
memory doesn’t stretch that far back. I think the last time I did
an oil filter like this Jaguar was a customer of mine.
