[Saloon-lovers] Overdrive wiring (1967 S-type)

Overdrive wiring.

Sorry its happened again. I took photos when I removed the
overdrive wires from the top, however they didn’t come out.
Also everything was covered in oil…

(overdrive and gearbox rebuilt. Now put in)

I think I have 5 wires, something like 2 blue and green and
two brown and green and a yellow.

Page 59 of the service manual has a basic description.

Does anyone have any better descriptions of what goes where.
I am going to sit in the garage and sob in to my hands and
try and work it out. Anyone who can save my tears will be a
hero to me. For example does It matter which terminal the
wires connect to? (eg are they + and - )–

Lusstor,

I will tell you if you agree to stop stuttering… The solenoid
has one wire (+) to energize it. It is grounded through the
gearbox/engine block. The circuit is designed to energize the
solenoid only when in top gear after the switch is thrown. The
power (+) comes from fuse #3 to the reverse light switch (green) on
top of the gearbox. On OD cars, there is a short green wire that
brings power from the reverse light switch (same side terminal) to
the top gear switch. The reverse light switch is not in the
circuit. On the other side of the top gear switch, a yellow wire
with an inline fuse runs up to the column mounted OD switch. On
the other side of the column switch, a yellow/purple brings the
power down to the solenoid wire. Put a test lamp on the yellow/
purple wire and to ground, put the car in 4 th gear, key on, and
the OD switch should light the lamp. It should go off when you
move the gear lever out of 4 th or open the switch.

The solenoid only has one wire, but there are two coils inside, a
closing coil and a holding coil. The closing coil pulls 20 amps
and slams the OD lever open, trips an internal switch, and the 1
amp holding coil holds it open. If the mechanical adjustment of
the lever is incorrect, you can blow the fuse or burn out the
solenoid.
