[Saloon-lovers] Overheating; 3.8 S-Type

Forum,
I am asking for help. I have a problem with very rough
running and engine dying (overheating ?) that I cannot
seem to manage.
The motor is a 4.2 from an XJ6 rebuilt by XKs ten years
ago. The head (rebuilt) is the original from the car.
With a 3.8 head and a 4.2 block the compression is about
8.5:1.
The problem happens at 185-190 degrees F (85-90C) when in
traffic. The starting carb floods (evidence: pooling of
gas in the tube of the starting carb; auto choke). the
temp at this point is approaching 90 on the gague. When
back at speed, the temp drops back and the problem
resolves.
Have aluminum radiator.
2 HD 8s just cleaned and serviced.
Timing correct.
Electronic Ignition
Pusher fan on thermostat
Automatic choke switch works and is needed to starting.
Starting carb works for startup and when engine is still
cool it turn off normally.
Removing thermostat to assure flow through radiator
doesn’t help.
Ambient temp here in Reno is about 90 F.
I cannot understand if this is really an overheating
problem or not
Any ideas will be welcomed. Thank you in advance.–

It could be a bad coil but my first thought is that your fuel is boiling in
the sediment bowl, because that’s what happened in my MK2 whenever it got
hot in traffic. I ended up bypassing the sediment bowl so the fuel would
spend less time heating up under the bonnet and that solved the problem. I
also added a filter at the pump.

My thoughts were fueling issues too. Either boiling or pump problems. I had
this problem with a Mk-9 that turned out to be a pump failing.

Hi Ian,
The “S” is basically a Mark II- check some of the suggestions I gave to a Mark II inquiry. I assume this is the same car that XK’s restored some years ago? There could be other problems but overheating is typical in the Mark II and Ancillary models.

Hello,

Did you check the ignition timing?
this could also be an issue for overheating.
A good electic fan helps a lot.
I dumped the mechanically fan, also helps.
Heat is trapped under the bonnet, opening up the triangles at the rear of the front wheels helps.
A lot more tips can be found here on the forums.
