[Saloon-lovers] removal of steering box on the 420G

I have read the text in the black Service Manual. Are there
any shortcuts that might benefit from? I can see 1/2 inch
of splines on the inner column where it enters the round,
wide socket at the top of the lower steering column.
Ideally I would like to pull out the steering wheel as
little as possible…

two things;

I cant see why you could not just detach the box from the
lower splines and slide it down and out, without removing
upper column, once everything else is undone.

The manual describes to detach the Pitman arm from the
draglink end. I could not separate this joint in the car.

Instead, I would try and pull the Pitman Arm, with box in car.

( I believe the above description is how someone else did
this job)

I am taking the front suspension out, to O/H it–

I did this job 15 years back. As I recall, this is how it is done:

Turn the wheels straight ahead.

Remove hydraulic hoses.

Remove the steering arm from the bottom of the box. You’ll need a
puller to do that.

I seem to recall the steering rod that goes back to the steering
wheel has a clamp near the universal joint that has to be loosened
near the steering box. You then pull back the steering wheel, without
anything else being loosened, an inch or so to separate it from the
box. I think I may have had to use a spreader to “crack loose” the
universal joint at the steering box end, before I was able to pull
back on the steering wheel.

Unscrew the box from the cross member and remove.

Reverse it to re-install. Take care not to cross thread the bolts
that hold the box to the cross member. They are quite difficult to
obtain, as they are grade 8 with an unusual configuration of length
and threaded/collar area.

After topping up the fluid, start the car, turn the steering all the
way left and then all the way right. Top of the fluid. Do this
another 3 times to fully purge the box of air.

I also did it about 15 years ago and exactly as Craig
described. Now I realise that my car is a 4.2mk 10 but I
believe the steering box mounting is the same as a 420g.
I also kept the pittman arm in place.
I still have the original box.I replaced it with another NOS
box
What is wrong with yours, leaks, low oil pressure?

You were right Tony.
It did come out and down. Main bummer was releasing the
steering box arm from the linkage. An extractor, hammer
and lever were needed.
We did the exchange in less than 45 mins.
