[Saloon-lovers] South African 420s

Some time back, I came across a 420 in a scrap yard here in Somerset,
England. The guy claimed that it came from South Africa, and I noticed that
it didn’t have leather and it had a very heavy and coarse headlining
material. I don’t remember noticing the wheels - next time I’m that way,
I’ll have a look if it’s still there. Does anyone know how much the locally
built CKD cars varied from UK-built ones ?

Hi Bernard,

You found the most obvious differences already: the headliner, no leather.
As far as the wheels are wheels are concerned, the old pics I’ve seen of
late new 420’s had S-type wheels (as does my '66 MkII incidentally).

I assume there must be more local content than just that, but so far I
haven’t found any other differences, not in the 420, nor in the MkII (Also
headliner, Ambia upholstery and no picnic tables) My MkII was delivered to
its’ first client in June '66, and by that time I think they did away with
the standard leather and picnic tables in the UK as well?

Cheers!
