Hi Lovers, HELP
I need some advice, I have new 215-75-16 radials for my mark IX from
Diamond Back tires, and tubes don’t seem to be available, but they are
“tubeless” tires, the problem is that the wheels don’t have the inner
bump that supposedly tubless wheels have. Can I use the wheels safely
without tubes???
Thanx,
Bob

I use modern radials of the same dimensions as the Diamond back tyres and I use tubes. Because of the old fashioned construction of the wheels themselves I have assumed that driving tubeless would be too dangerous and in any case there would always be air seepeage due to the fact that the rims are not constructed to cope with tubeless tyres.
I have bought my tubes from Vintage Tyre Supplies in the UK. They have a website. The tubes are not very expensive and easily shipped.

Radial tubes are available everywhere…even here in Juneau. They cover a
range of sizes these days. I had no problem getting tubes for my 16" XK
tires. I think you should make a couple more local phone calls.

I have been running tubeless radial Diamond Back Classic Dunlop radials on my
61 MK 9 for about three years now and have had no problems of any kind. I
have not had any excessive leakage of air, no more than a tube type tire. I
run the car at highway speeds (80 mph) regularly and can actually take
corners without screeching rubber. I did my research before I went tubeless,
asking knowledgeable people about the difference between tube type and
tuleless rims. I also found that tubeless tires were an option on the same
rims on the Mk 7, as is listed in the parts manual. I compared the rims to
American tubeless rims and saw no difference, except that the center is
rivetted to the outer rim. I also know that commercial jet aircraft have
rivetted skins, and they are pressurized, so that did not concern me.
This thread resurfaces every few months and I usually answer in the same
manner. Using a tube certainly will do no harm, kind of like wearing a belt
and suspenders. I wear a belt only. If the tires continually lost air I
would simply install tubes.

Nokian (Finnish tyre manufacturer) 205R16 tubeless radials have been in use
in my Mk7 for years. Both as std and studded M+S in the winter time. The
size is the same as in early Range Rovers and they fit excellently. The car
is fun and safe to drive. The wheels are std mk7 wheels (repainted).
Personally I don’t see much point in driving with original 6.70 diagonals;
such is the difference!

I am just getting through some old emails, so I didn’t notice your message
until today. We have the same car and the same tires. About eight months ago,
we installed the tires without tubes. There has been no air leakage at all. The
shop that installed the tires told me that the wheels had the bump for radials
and that tubes were unnecessary. So far so good.
