[Saloon-lovers] Vinyl Roof

Hi, my recent acquisition is a 1962 3.8 Mk2 MOD. that has
sat dormant for 30 yrs. The original engine was fully
rebuilt with invoice in 1978 but it is now solid, so far
resisting all efforts on the crank nut to turn by hand
(well, foot actually!) But my question is about the vinyl
roof it has. Except for Coombs cars and the later Inspector
Morse 2.8, I don’t recall ever seeing a MK2 with a vinyl
roof from the factory. Before removing it and refinishing
the roof in body colour, am I right? The car is Opalescent
Dark Blue with a White Vinyl roof and thin whitewall Pirelli
Cinturato tyres.–

I do not believe there were any factory vinyl roofs on the
Mark II. Jaguar did do factory vinyl roofs in black only on
the mid 70s XJ6 and XJ12 coupes however.–

Hi,

Yes, for the Series 1 and Series 2 XJ’s all coups had a
black vinyl roof and it was an option AFAIK for all XJ’s,
but very rare on other models than the Daimlers. On all
Daimler Sovereign Vanden Plas and Double Six Vanden Plas
models it was standard and I have seen also a few XJ12’s
with the (optional) vinyl roof. The chrome finisher on the
C-pillar was different on different models.

But regarding history, I think that ALL SS1 and SS2 Saloons
and Coups had a vinyl roof and vinyl covered trunk. Back
then also in other colours than black, usually colour coded
to the paint colour. (1931-1935)

But from the factory not on any MK!, MK2 or MKIV, MKV,
MKVII-MKIX or MKX.

Cheers,
