[Saloon-lovers] Woo-hoo, it's running

Greetings Amigos,
My new engine in the 3.8 S ran today after much struggle. Six
weeks ago it all went back together with the new 700r4 transmission
and fired happily on the first push of the button. After about 30
seconds it petered out and died. After many iterations I
determined that the new Mallory distributor had a badly machined
drive dog making it walk under load. In addition, the new Cometic
head gasket poured water out of every seam and the power steering
pump was pumping it’s fluid onto the ground. All totally
unacceptable and unwarranted. At that point I walked away because
the racing season was eating up my time. Last weekend the season
ended and this morning I was free to return to the beloved S. I
pulled the Mallory out of the racer and put it into the S and spent
several hours making the gear reduction starter fit the flywheel.
I set the timing about 56 times and charged the battery. Suddenly,
vroom, it’s alive and purring.
Surprisingly, the Cometic is now just a dribble at the rear and
overtightening all the hose clamps helped the power steering pump.
All the chevy gears work and the oil is burned off the manifolds.
We may be motoring soon.
If anyone needs DG-250 bits nows the time…Steve–

Woo-Hoo, it’s not…
Came out on this clear cold Sunday morning and upon the first touch
of the button the S fired and idled happily. I ran it up and down
the driveway many times and worked up to around the block trips.
Woo-Hoo! The wife needed potatoes so of course, Let’s Go! Went to
the gas station, filled both tanks with premium and then to the
supermarket. Of course, when done it wouldn’t start. It turns
over about half a revolution and then the high dollar geaer
reduction starter just spins. Some kids in a Camaro told me that
is a classic Chevy failure and I need to take some shims out of the
starter. Oh well, an off duty repo man brought us home (FAST TOO)
and I can fiddle with it some more. The Jag part is sweet, it’s
this alternative crap giving me the trouble. Steve–
