I tried hard to get in tight on the joint in question. Not much luck.
As best as I can tell, it is a simple u joint. But, I gotta say that it looks a tad different from the one in my 83!

See if you can get in to a parts catalogue with an exploded view drawing of the part.

But , however constructed, slop is not good.

In older USA cars, a flex joint was employed. Layers of rubber and cord, akin to a tire section. Known as a “rag joint”.

And, yes a vibration “dampener” in effect.
