Smoke from console area / 'no power in 'D'

Probably put 100 miles on the car since I bought it.
'an '85 sedan with a TPI 350 and matching 4 speed auto.

Things started smoking and engine died.
I pulled the shifter area apart but found no melted wiring.

The car started fine with no smoke but nothing happened in 'D
I shifted into 2nd and drove the 1 mile home.

I’d like to hear any input any of you might offer.
I’m not really concerned as this can’t be anything too
monumental or take a million to correct.

I put 6 months insurance on the car when I bought it.
I’ll cancel it today.

When nicer, warmer weather sets in I’ll start by pulling the engine/trans.
It will be going in a '75 sedan. 'Just a bit sooner than I was thinking.

I’ve the time-health-money-tools-space-knowledge to make this happen.
Thank You God.

I’ll continue to post ads to lumps

I am sorry to hear this, I pray this will work out as I know you enjoy your ‘lumps’. A transmission issue is a bloody PITA.I hope that the problem lies within the console instead of the gearbox.

Blessings.

I moved the car in the driveway just now, expecting to shift into ‘2’ to get the car to move. Well, it moves in ‘D’ so that’s good.

It’s good that I didn’t spend much time being bummed out when things went bad last week.

Everything will get looked at very closely when I pull the engine/trans out.
That will be happening in late spring
