Starter 2.5 l SS100 /MK4

How can I identify from what car a starter is from, it is eighter a SS100 or a MK4.
There is no identification tag on the starter.

The diameter of a 2.5 L starter is 4.18" and of a 3.5L is 4.5", and they have the solenoid attached to them.
This is a 2.5L starter, model M418.

However my question was not about difference between 2.5 and 3.5 but between a 2.5 L SS100 and a 2.5 L MK4, hope you can answer tis as well.

I believe the 2.5 litre SS and MkIV starters can be swapped and will work.

So it would appear that there was a change in type post-war, but exactly what was the change is not clear. It may have been minor.
