My 88 xjs does not have a grease nipple in the steering rack but has a screw in plug where it should be when i removed the plug the hole was full of black gunk.Is there any way of flushing this out and should I refit a grease nipple

They deleted the grease fitting later in production because people overfilled and caused issues. Just leave it alone.

It leads into the chamber covered by the driver’s side gaitor. If you really think you wanna clean it out, just loosen the big end of that gaitor and slide it back over the tie rod. You’ll be looking into a cavity containing the rack and pinion teeth.

Thanks for the information if I dont need to i won’t fiddle with it
