SU needle bias question

Today I dismantled (first time on this car) my Hs8 SU’s for overhaul. As removed from the car both needles were biased towards the engine (away from the air filter). When I looked at the SRM the diagram seems to show the bias in the opposite direction, but the illustration is not clear (to me at least). Can anyone tell me what is the correct bias - and what effect the difference would have on performance?

I’ve just had a brief chat with Burlen FS technical dept who say that “generally on the Jags” the bias is towards the engine. After high mileages some wear between jet and needle may have occurred so changing the bias on re-assembly using old components may change engine running characteristics, but where new jets and needles are being fitted that will not be relevant. Apparently the direction of bias (according to Burlen) “is something to do with emissions”) - otherwise it is not that important.

Thought the above may be helpful to anyone else with the same query.
