I used a wire last week instead of the busted relay. At first, the engine began to run worse, but then I came back to it’s own usual self. After another 10 seconds, white smoke, or some kind of gas came out of the engine bay. Does this indicate that I did not have a leak before, but starting the Air Con created one?
thanks for the replies, I’ll get down the garage and have a look–

In reply to a message from Erik Bergman Empir AB sent Fri 25 Apr 2003:
Erik,
Almost certainly. Welcome to the club!
Don’t try running the compressor again until you check if there is
gas and oil in there.
I suggest you remove the aircon compressor drive belt before
starting the engine again in case the pulley bearing is dry /
knackered as mine was. It generated a lot of heat because it is
spinning all the time the engine is running. (I cut the belt off
because I intend to fit a new one anyway and the belt adjuster is a
pain to get at from below.)
With the belt off, get a wrench on to the centre nut on the front
of the compressor and see if you can turn the shaft easily
clockwise. If there is a lot of resistance or it seems to ‘snag’ as
you rotate it, suspect a compressor piston has broken / become
detached - as mine did.–
