Timing gear intermediate shaft, XK, 3.4 or 4.2?

I’m trying to assemble the new timing gear on my 3.4 engine. I have a new intermediate shaft (C26608) and sprocket, but the shaft has the machined groove for the circlip in a different position from the old original 1955 3.4 shaft. The original type of shaft is no longer available. Is this OK to fit, and forget the circlip? The shaft is held in place by the front and rear cast timing plates, so I don’t see why it needs a circlip (and shims) to retain it. If I do need to use a circlip with this shaft, I’ll either need to find a later rear plate (with a thinner casting) to mount the new shaft in, or just re-use the old shaft in the old plate. That would be a shame as the old shaft is scored and worn, not great with a new sprocket.
Can anyone help, please?
