I have looked at two XJ-Ss this last week. In both cases the 10th position in the British VIN does not decode according to the key in Kirby Palm’s book.
In the first case a 1984 XJ-S HE had the letter E in the 10th position when I would have expected to find a B. This would mean the car was a “face lift” or model year change. Was there a model year change or face lift for the 1984 model?
In the second case a 1986 XJS has the letter G in the 10th position. There is no reference for the letter G at all for the 10th position in Kirby’s key. Can anyone explain the discrepancy?

I understand that for North America the 10th character of
the VIN denoted the year of build - A = 1980, B = 1981, etc.
In other markets it denoted the model - A = Pre-HE XJS, B =
HE coupe, C = AJ6 powered, D = V12 convertible, E = Facelift.
I find it a rather confusing issue and there could be some
inconsistencies about it.
E would equate to 1984 on the NA scale.–

As far as consistancy does exist, the J ('87) in the VIN at the10th position
corresponds to the mfg date on the info plate on the door jamb of my '88 H&E
convertible.
