[v12-engine] 1979 XJ12

Hello I am a new member I just bought a 1979XJ12
I found that the screws and rubber bushing were broke on
one side of the trigger, in side of the distributor. IS
there any one out there that would have some old screws and
bushing,
So I dont have to buy a new one, the trigger is is fairly new .
THanks Vic–

Dear Vic,
Welcome to the club.
The srews indeed are very easy to loose and severe for breaking.
However every machinery shop is able to machine the screws.
I have paid only 5 U$ each. That is expensive. However a new trigger unit is
more expensive for only the screws and bushings.
Succes

Vic,

The trigger board is supposed to have a special rubber grommet
that slips into slots at the corners of the board, as I recall.
Special, nylon shoulder screws pass through the grommets to
hold the board to the dizzy body. None of these are
available parts, as far as I know. When I lost 2 of the
shoulder screws I got some nylon screws at an industrial
hardware store. I could not match the original thread so
I drilled and tapped the body to the next larger size I could get.
To simulate a shoulder, I got a length of “milky” tubing at the
hardware store with ID that would slip over the screws and cut
pieces the length of the shoulder. It works.

There are a few lines in the Book about that screw size. I supplied Kirby
with the idea the thread was maybe 4BA, since BA was a thread form often
used in British electrical gear. However, since then I have collected 3 or
4 old V12 dizzies and I know that one of the standard U.S. threads fits
where the nylon screw goes. I forget the size, 6-32 or something like that.

20 years ago when my dizzy needed TLC I found the nylon screws broken. I
tapped the dizzy 4BA or something and used brass screws, and it worked for
another 10 years. I have no clue why Lucas used nylon screws, and I would
be 99% certain steel screws would work but try it and see. The location of
the trigger board is moderately demanding in tolerance, but you can probably
get some rubber grommet or similar from a rubber specialist store or
electronic parts supplier that gets you almost there. A bit of work with a
scalpel and silastic will give you a good substitute.
