[v12-engine] 83 XJS climate control removal

for weight reduction has anyone pulled one of these units ,
they are pretty heavy I hear… I have the bulkhead nut
from the firewall off, but cannot get the demist unit
off…so nothing else will come off either.–

The demist unit is held in by self tappers. There is one in
the centre near the screen bottom, as well as (from memory)
a fixing each end. It can JUST be undone using a pozi bit in
a pair of pliers or in a small ring spanner. This problem
defeated me too until I was told about it by someone who knew.

The dash has to come off first though!

Yes I pulled them off (pull is the operative word)… I was
brutally crude about it since I knew It didn’t have to go
back on (no 35 year old former race car ever returns to the
street) I also removed the power brake booster. With the
proper sized master cylinders it’s just not needed even for
weak legged men like me…
If you work hard enough it’s possible to get over 1500
pounds of weight out of a XJ-S
Changes like that turn even mildly uprated XJ-S’s into real
screamers…–
