[v12-engine] Dyno-in-your-pocket

Hi,
You folks may find this interesting. I recently upgraded to
an iphone 3G and in the apps store there are hundreds of
applications, something for whatever your interest is. A
friend brought an application to my attention called
‘‘Dynolicious’’. It works with the accelerometer and GPS in
the phone to determine your engines hp and torque. You enter
the vehicle weight(run it over the scales at the local grain
elevator) approximate drivetrain loss,(around 15% average,
I’m told), calibrate the phone and go. It will not only plot
hp and torque but will also give time at intervals to 1/4
mile as well as longitudinal AND lateral G’s. I tried it
with my '92 daily driver and got 245 hp with a top speed of
95.1 mph and peak G of .71, achieved on a closed course with
professional driver, of course. The second run only showed
18 hp, which was achieved just prior to the failure of the
head gasket. But son of a gun, I had fun and got to know my
4.0 a bit more intimately. Reviews I have read by engine
tuners who have compared dyno readings with the iphone rate
it highly. Results are within 10%, but more importantly,
appear to be highly repeatable. I think if you break
traction, accuracy would go in the tank, though. The
reviews didn’t address that. You iphone guys, give it a try.

Greg

What about your local metal scrap yard? When I registered Ted that was the
only place in the town that had a scale of that size. The registration fees
were based on the weight of the vehicle.

Guys I was only being sarcastic. If I wanted to weigh my car
our local dump weighs you in and out. 5 cents a pound for
anything other than leaves and brush.

Lots of places to weigh a car. Truck stops have scales too.–

Interesting Greg, we pay US 4 cents per pound equivelant, but the
weighbridge is read to the nearest 50 lb and is always rounded up.
Jaguar content? The weighbridge accuracy is directly proportional
to the accuracy of a Jaguar oil pressure gauge.–
