IOW, Loctite 518 or some such?

and the vertical surfaces which had
originally held the rubber strips ( aka hockey sticks ).

Well, Loctite 518 may or may not seal the
sides.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I have never seen Loctite 518 that I remember, but if I recall
correctly as posted to this and other list, this is a red low viscosity
jelly type stuff , which is good for sealing metal to metal surfaces where
you should not use a gasket … Actually I don’t know for sure what it is .
The Right Stuff is also a Loctite relatively new product, and is intended
for sealing metal to metal interfaces that would normally use a gasket of
some form .It is quite viscous and is it comes out of the delivery tube by
pressing it sideways, and it flows out slowly and is quite thick . It does
spread easily with a spatula and can be spread in a thin film in this way.Iy
is also very resistant to oil environments.

any rubber seals at all, as I had filled the groove previously with
sealant which had been allowed to cure and the excess was cutoff with
a very sharp blade flush with the metal surface .

OK, why did you do that that way rather than the way you’re supposed
to: bolt the cap on and then inject sealant into the groove on each
side until it oozes out the top>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
"The Right Stuff " does not lend itself to squeezing into that groove.
Instead you would have to use something that can be injected with some
pressure such as Silicone Sealant in a caulking gun. I would be nervous
about squeezing stuff willy nilly into that groove as I would be quite
unclear exactly where it would finish up .I was not comfortable with that
one at all . I think my way will work ,even though it required a few more
steps to achieve . John M Holmes1973 E-Type S III Supra 5-speed, Ontario.

If the bearing cap is anything like the later V12’s, there is a 45 degree
chamfer at each corner, where it joins the block. You inject down the
groove until you see a bead starting to emerge from the chamfer, then stop
squeezing the gun.
