Everyone who has worked on their AAV will recognize these
part numbers, particularly the latter two. There is lots of
information in The Book and in the archives on the
differences, cleaning, assembly, etc. of EAC4438/EAC2273
Well, there is only one topic on EBC1198 - the AAV for the
6.0L. They are nearly impossible to find (only motorcars
has it on their website) and it costs 2x the obscene amount
asked for the AAV for the 5.3L engine. The supply/demand
argument aside, does anyone know what is different in the
EBC1198 design that requires the doubling of the price?
Also, since I am ready to embark on a project that involves
cleaning my AAV, I was wondering how much of what it has
been said on this forum about the AAV for the 5.3L engine
applies to mine (EBC1198)?
The fact that the knowledge-base on this subject is limited
and the part is hard to obtain in the US makes me very
nervous.

In reply to a message from Merica sent Tue 10 Jul 2012:
$560 + S&H ?
Plus they are Sold out, as the item description says.
I have communicated privately with Dr. Bolles who believes
that the cheaper EAC2273 can substitute the EBC1198 without
any problems.
While I was surfing the web, I also found out that the last
of the 5.3L fitted in the first year of the face-lifted XJS
(MY 1992) had their own AAV part # - EBC3819, which btw is
also outrageously expensive.
Exclusivity? Dr. Bolles said ‘‘it is just a valve’’
Regards,
Steve–

So STeve, Kirby, et al - - to pick up with Steve’s recommendation of moving our discussion to this thread, I ponder whether I should leave well enough alone regards my idle on the 1995 6.0 XJS. I don’t have a high idle not adjustable by AAV idle screw issue. I can turn the screw and achieve changes up and down. Cold start or warm, the idle screw does cause adjustments to the idle.RPMs.
AT the current setting, when warmed up the engine idles at 725-750 while at first cold start it is idling steady at about 600.
If I do nothing, am I hurting anything ?
As you pointed out, the price of either the EAC 2273 or the EBC 1198 is very high. I saw some prices in the 353 Lbs and 400 plus dollars ranges. Welsh had each of them listed and priced at $219.
All the info and discussion is quite thought provoking. Could be I am delaying the inevitable change of AAV and perhaps should pull the trigger on buying one - - - so I did. Would rather have a shiny new one one my parts shelf than in the unobtanium realm. Will be interesting to see if it makes much difference.
If this was 2012, I’d say – let’s try to figure it out.
In 2017, having been burnt multiples times by “repairs” no needed – I’d say – leave it alone.
If the engine works fine and the car is a good driver, don’t bother. My $0.02
Steve
PS I will be very skeptical of a vendor that claims to have EBC1198 for less than $400.
The prices seem to have gone up since 2012. And again, to repeat what I said in my response to you – EAC2273 which seems to be more readily available and at about 1/2 of the price of EBC1198 looks and performs exactly the same.
Hi Steve - – I saw two different sources that had each of them listed at about 215-230 range.
Maybe they were made in China ?
At any rate, I am in no hurry to fuss with actually doing this R&R, but will feel all warm and fuzzy knowing if I want to swap out the valve and play around, I can. Or if I start having the high idle and can’t adjust, I have a third world part
Darn, just realized I forgot to inquire about and order a gasket
Think I’ve binned at least 3 of them over the last couple of years! Just not used on the application I built the engines for. I’ll have a look to see if I can find any of them they may still be around. If I find any - can’t say what condition they’d be in, but if you wanted me to I could maybe send them over the pond to you. They are definitely the 6.0 Litre ones?
