[v12-engine] Idling woes

I have a '90 XJ-S which I have to hold at 1500 for 20 - 30
seconds when starting from hot. Then it will (just) idle.
After another minute or so everything is fine.

In addition it idles at 1500 for about one minute when
started from cold.

Hints anybody?–

I would suspect your AAV… auxilliary air valve. These are
notorious for not functioning properly, and viciously expensive if
you choose to replace them. I would override the system
personally, if I found mine faulty.

What is normal idle for your car, PEXJC?

Normally 700rpm. The car had been to a so-called specialist
(I hadn’t heard of him before) shortly before the sale, with
receipts to show. The adjustments for butterflies / throttle
wit various switches etc. was way out. He either hasn’t
touched it or he doesn’t know anything at all. Now the cold
idle is OK after a few seconds helping it along with the
throttle. But it wont idle at all from start wether cold or
hot. So I’ll check the supplementary air valve for sticking
next. The recipe seems to be remove, soak in penetrating
oil, refit. If that doesn’t do the trick I’ll check my usual
sources. They often come up with much better prices.–
