[v12-engine] kickdown switch

Hi people,

My brother is still sorting out my overheating problem. We have sent the
radiator out to be re-cored. And my brother said he will be repairing the
stuck advance weights when he puts it all back together. My question today
is about the kickdown solenoid. When i bought the car the owner told me
that the solenoid was bad. He had brought it to a transmission place for a
oil change and they told him the solenoid didn’t work.

My brother said the wire is on and there is power to the switch and it gets
to the solenoid, so the solenoid must be bad. How hard is it for me to
change this solenoid myself? From what he said it seems to be a simple
thing to do. Where can I get a new one? From Jaguar? Would any
regular auto parts store have one? What is the part number or correct
name? How do i describe it to the parts store?

Thanks

I have what is listed as a kickdown switch in the throttle line.

A single cable connects to one terminal, and nothing on the other.

There also a paird cable set, connecting to nothing.

Can someone advise as to what this switch does, and the correct
connections.

Cheers…Keith–

In reply to a message from kascroydon sent Mon 13 Nov 2006:

There is supposed to be two connections to the switch, it sounds
like only one is connected at the moment. The switch activates on
full throttle as the cable sheath is pushed toward the linkage
mount. The purpose of the switch is to make the automatic
transmission (I trust that it is an auto) change down a gear under
full throttle acceleration. It does this by energizing a solinoid
on the transmission. The Haynes manual suggests that the wires
connecting be green in colour, with one terminal having a green
wire/s the other terminal a green / white wire. The Haynes test
proceedure as follows:

  1. Switch on the ignition and check that the input terminal on the
switch is live (12volt test lamp or multi meter). These terminals
have green wires running to them.

  2. Connect your earthed test lamp or Multi Meter to the output
terminal (greenwhite wire) and fully depress the throttle pedal.
If the lamp does not light release the throttle pedal and gently
depress the arm of the switch. If the lamp does not light then
renew the switch by uncrewing its mounting bolts.

  3. If the lamp lights, loosen the retaining bolts and move the
switch towards the cable so that the lamp lights by teh switch
action with the throttle pedal fully depressed.

hope this helps
