[v12-engine] Octane Ratings and Oxygen sensors - Australia

I have just bought a European Spec 1985 XJ-S V12 (British Import) down here
in Australia The interior and body are in good condition, the engine seems
a bit rough and in need of a tune up. It idles at about 250rpm. It has a
bit of a rattle on hard acceleration, but is quiet as a mouse at light
cruise. It was running just above the “N” mark after some hard driving.
The previous owner has been running on Leaded (96 RON). There are no cat
converters or oxygen sensors on the car. I would like to run on Premium
unleaded (96 Ron)and fit some oxygen sensors to get the benefits of the
closed loop system.

  1. Do I need to add an octane booster to each tank to get the 98 RON
    fuel used in England?

  2. Is it worth while fitting oxygen sensors?

  3. Where do the Oxygen sensors go, and how do I wire it up?

  4. Is there any way to check whether it runs 12.5:1 compression or
    11.5:1 compression

Currently the radiator is out getting rodded (PO used Bars Leaks and changed
the water every year). I was surprised by the amount of junk behind the oil
cooler as well - completely blocking the lower third. The distributor
comes out tonight for overhaul.

  1. Is it worth while fitting oxygen sensors?

I’m betting the answer is no. I think you’ll have to buy a new
ECU, and there won’t be one readily available to operate a Euro-spec
engine with oxygen sensors, so you’ll probably have to have AJ6
Engineering build you one. Better part of a grand, I’ll bet – and
probably no measurable benefit except in tailpipe emissions.

  1. Where do the Oxygen sensors go, and how do I wire it up?

They go in the downpipes, and they connect to the ECU via shielded
cables. You’d probably need to add those cables, too.

  1. Is there any way to check whether it runs 12.5:1 compression or
    11.5:1 compression

Tell us what the engine number is. It’s at the very rear end of the
V, just above where the tranny bolts on. You’ll probably have to
scrape crud off to see it. Somebody here will probably be able to
tell you the CR based on the engine number.

1/ No

2/ No

3/ Usually not possible

4/ Almost always The higher comp ratio. Can be checked by engine number

A well maintained car dosent benifit from closed loop systems; you have one
of the best spec combinations as it stands
