[v12-engine] radical idle

hi all, first time post and new jag lover
i have a 1988 xjs last year before parking for winter I needed
to replace the altenator and went in through the top removing
air pump, recentlly put it all back together and now my idle
when warm goes up and down from 700 rpm to 1500 rpm
im sure I must have a line not on right or something like that
can somebody point me in the direction of a diagram so I can chase
vacume lines or any sugestions!!!
much thanx…

That is what the engine does when there is a big vacuum leak somewhere.
I know you said it is all back together, but did you actually put the
air filter housing back on yet? The bolts that hold it to the throttle
plate go clean through… want to guess how I found out?--------------------

My V12 does the same thing after warm up.
I found the hose from the bellows of the cruise control is not
attached anywhere.
Could this cause the engine to rev up and down and where does this
hose attach.
All help is appreciated.

I had those symptoms a few months ago caused by a vacuum leak and a
faulty coolant temp sensor.–

I had a similar problem. When I got my '86 back in February, it
idled at about 1200 RPM. I found several things wrong when I got
into it. The vacuum advance on the distrib was bad, the vacuum
plumbing to the advance, which is rather complicated on my vintage,
was all screwed up. Some vac hoses had rotted away, a couple of
tees were broken or missing. Since you just worked on your air
pump, check vacuum lines to the air switching valve from thermal
vacuum switch on right rear of block. Also check plumbing to dump
valve. there should be a series of vacuum routing diagrams on
stickers on the underside of the hood on the right. mine were all
covered with dirt, I didn’t even discover them until I had already
replaced all the vacuum hoses. The emissions section of the jag ROM
is very poorly written, it is better to go by your stickers. Make
sure there are NO vacuum ports that are left open. The cruise
control hose on mine was hooked to a port on the front right intake
plenum.
