[v12-engine] Re: 7 litre V-12 for Cadillac

Any truth in the rumour that GM intend to build a 7 litre V-12 for the
Caddy?

Well, they are showing a concept car called the Cien equipped with a 7.5L,
750hp V12. See:

http://www.cadillac.com/cadillacjsp/futuremodels/cien/index.html

Personally the V12 sounds a bit weak compared to the V16 concept car with a
13.6L, 7000 rpm, 1000hp V16!

Whether either of these engines will actually see production is not known.
My guess is that they will not . . .

Hi Greg: Reading your e-mail about the experimental Cadillacs brought up
some interesting, at least to me, ideas about hp and performance and the need
for it.
Recently, since the article on our supercharged V-12 XJ-S came out in
Jaguar World Monthly we have completed the engine work we had planned on the
V-12. It really was simple work, very expensive but simple. We changed the
serpentine belt system from 6 ribs to 10 ribs for positive contact at all
times and under all rpms etc. We also reduced the size of the pulleys to the
Whipple superchargers so that the maximum boost is 13.5 hp. Of course it
could be reduced further to boost the medium range but that is another story.
We also have completely isolated the incoming air for the blowers to outside
cool air that is drawn entirely from the lip in the center of the hood at the
cowl.
The result…The hp jumps from 555.7 hp with 517 lb/ft torque to (this is
a carefully calculated estimate) 750+ hp and 650 lb/ft torque. On this
coming Monday we will know for certain because we are going for the final
dyno-tuning. By now you are probably asking yourself “why is he telling me
this and how does it reflect on my e-mail to Mark Jackson and the list.”
Well, it has to do with you saying that the 1,000 hp of the show model
Cadillac made the 750 hp Cien seem sort of puny. I have read some of the
techs on the Cien, especially the Carbon-Fiber body panels and the overall
use of similar light-weight materials. I can only imagine that the curb
weight would be about 3,000 lbs or less and hooray for them for that. Again
you are probably asking yourself “Why…”
During the middle of last week two of us (I was not the driver) decided
to take the XJ-S for its first (and possibly only) balls-out 0-100 mph
highway blast. Needless to say we did it on a very safe, almost closed,
piece of highway in dry conditions and with no traffic. I have ridden in
alot of fast cars but nothing that matches the performance of this XJ-S. The
only road car that came close to it during a similar test was a Z-1 Corvette.
I wish I could say definitively that the times were such and such but the
start was so formitable and I was pushed back so far into the passenger’s
seat that I was slightly late in starting my recording of the time. The back
pressure was such that I actually threw my back out and it is still out. If
I can remember properly the run ended in 3rd gear at about 4,500 to 5,000 rpm
(it all happened so quickly that I just couldn’t watch everything.) There
was very little smoking of the tires. Basically, the only rubber burn was
during the two shifts and it was very small. I thought that traction was
going to be an over-all problem but it hasn’t been yet and after this run I
don’t think it will be. The tires are about a 11.5" footprint and I am a
fair heavyweight…that may be part of it. When we went through 100 I was
still pushed back into the seat and had been for, as far as I can figure,
well under 8 seconds. Under, 8 seconds from 0-100 mph in a true street car
with all the normal Jaguar GTO amenities.
When I got out of the car my legs were shaking. Sure there are race cars
that are considerably faster. I am sure there are other street cars that are
just as fast but few of them weight 4,000 lbs and are as well-appointed as
one’s living room.
I guess when I read your comment about 750 hp seeming puny compared to
1,000 hp it reminded me of my own recent blast down the highway with the puny
750 hp. I have trouble imagining how that extra 250 hp could get to the
ground on a 3,000 lb vehicle. I am not that convinced that it, in reality,
could. I have had a suspicion that we are very close to reaching the limits
of acceleration 0-60, 0-100, 0-150 and of course 0-200 considering the
materials available to non-competition cars. So, I wonder if the extra 250
hp would even make a difference. If it can’t get to the ground it is
useless.
I haven’t spoken to you lately…so hello. I hope everything is well in
your world. I recently drove down and back along the I-95 corridor to
Florida which took me very close to you. I would really have liked to
stopped to see you. We may do the same trip in a few more months and in that
case we will stop. I’ll even stop and buy you a cup of coffee and if she is
good I’ll buy one for my dear wife as well. Bradley Smith
