[v12-engine] Re: [xj-s] How should a V12 5.3 HE idle?

G’day all,

Just wondering how smooth should the V12 5.3 HE idle, and what is the
ideal
idle speed in ‘N’ and also when in ‘D’ ?

Mine currently when in Drive idles at 550rpm and is fairly rough,
shaking
the car a little.

Thanks,

David Powell.

Hi David-

My '87 with 86,000 miles idles at 750 in park. I can rest a coin (US
Nickle) on edge on an intake manifold. Absolutely no body movement at
all or any vibration in the shift handle at any speed. Truly amazing!— David Powell dptv@bigpond.com wrote:

I’m sure Bialy’s engine is smooth, but I feel compelled to note that the
lack of vibration in the shift handle is no indication whatsoever. Not
only is the shift handle on the GM400 mounted on the car rather than on
the engine, in the XJ-S it’s actually SOFT mounted on the car!

Kirby-

Of course you’re right. I have 2 floor shift vehicles that I drive. The
Jag and my daily driver Probe. I can always feel a slight “buzz” from
the Probe’s shifter because it is mounted to the drive train and I got
used to that feel. When I’m in the Jag, its like a whole new world. You
don’t hear or feel anything at idle. After a weekend in the Jag, the
Probe seems incredibly rough. Every now and then, I drive my wife’s
urban assault vehicle(99 Expedition) and get to make an entirely
different set of comparisons.
That $4,800 Jaguar is the deal of the century!— Kirby Palm palmk@nettally.com wrote:
