[v12-engine] rough idle, emissions and fuel regulators

I posted earlier about my 1984 XJS that wouldn’t pass smog and is
running a little rough. Thanks for all the great advice so far!!
I haven’t had time to check all yet.
I was checking out the fuel pressure regulators and was curious
about something. Ok, you know how it has the hard line which
carries the fuel and then the vacuum line that goes to the intake
manifold at the front end! When I pull the vacuum off should
there be a tiny stream of gas coming out of the unit?? I have
never seen one of these opened up and don’t quite know how they
work, but I do indeed have gas coming out…much moreso on the
right bank. Is this part of their function or a fault? I have
read about the pressure test to see if they are faulty, but was
wandering if this gas in vac line should tell me something.–

Yea, follow that vacuum line to what it connects to – you’ll find it is
probably connected to a fuel regulator. If so (because that’s where fuel
would enter the vacuum system), the regulator diaphragm is broken. Replace
regulator, then watch fuelling improve because the pressure is being
properly regulated AND excess petrol isn’t being dumped into the
intake. Check both sides, although this is likely only a one-bank failure.

The regulator on A bank has no known purpose other than providing a visual
balance to the engine, many have taken it out and ran the fuel line direct
to the rail, check the archives. As for the B bank regulator, put a tee
between it and the rail, fit up a good quality gauge that you can leave
there so you know the psi all the time. Terry 83-12-VDP Canada
