[v12-engine] Starter motor variation at GM400 intro

Can anyone confirm that a variation exists between the starter
motor, its position and its mounting holes on a V12 engine with
GM400 trans compared to the earlier BW Model 12 fitted engine.
Where does the difference lie?.

Graham,
Yes there is a difference in the way the starter bolts to the T 400
vs the BW
I have a 77 XJS (currently for sale) that I fitted a GM T400 trans
to approx 23 years ago. Way back then I wanted to have the T 400
trans instead of the BW even though the BW was rebuilt and worked
fine. If I remember correctly the problem lies in the starter
mounting bolts, each trans has a different location for the
starter. The bell housing bolt patterns are the same except for the
starter. I cut off the starter mount from the V-12 block, mounted
the T400 case to the V-12 bell housing and rewelded/repositioned
the mount. (engine and trans were out of the car). I have never had
any problems with this set up, however it is a lot of work to go
through just for a different trans. Hope this info helps.

SORRY, I may have mis-spoken when stating the starter is located
differently between the two engines. Too many years ago. When
reading another post it was stated the dowels and crank converter
pilot holes are different.–
