[v12-engine] TPS

Paul-

“slide” potentiometers can be quite cheap- every boom
box in the world probably has 2 or 3 of them. The
“Digi-Key” catalog have some real cheap in single
quantities. They list a 10k ohm, 100mm travel, linear
taper unit for $5.97. Their part #pnf100sb-nd. Arrange
a bell crank at the proper radius and away you go.
I’m partial to Kirby’s approach with a Ford TPS- add a
cheap buffer amplifier between it(or any other TPS
that would fit)and the ECU, set the gain and offset to
match the idle and full throttle voltages and let’er
rip.===
I don’t practice what I preach
because I’m not the kind of person
I’m preaching to.

We had a long debate about this about 6 months ago. There are several
problems that have to be overcome in the choice of TPS. First is the
harsh environment (see the thread about heat soak, and consider the
grime that needs to be sealed out). Second, as the engine vibrates
slightly about mean position, the wiper scrubs the track (that is
actually likely to be the reason that the Jag TPS wears through, even
though it is a Bourns manufactured item).

We discussed a number of solutions. Either using alternative pots
(carbon, milspec, wirewound etc), through to mounting the pot near the
butterfly, and linking it to the end of the throttle shaft with a length
of hose (not a new idea, Roger Bywater of AJ6 suggested this). The
final alternative is to do away with a resistor entirely, and use an
optical position encoder, with no wiping parts at all. There then needs
to be an interface circuit to convert this to the required signal for
the ECU. In fact, technically that is the best solution, and will
outlast the life of the car; however it would almost certainly be much
more expensive than even the Jag TPS.

Hi All,
This is happening on the MS list, I am pretty sure it’s the same TPS that a
well known vendor is using to replace the Jag TPS.
The specs are here

A year ago, I hosted a group buy for a Spectrol d-shaft throttle
position sensor through Phil in Australia. If there are enough
buyers, I would be willing to do the group buy again. I believe
the
cost was around $18-20 per unit. This is an ideal sensor for L-
Jet,
D-Jet, and some Japanese models.

Let me know if you’re interested.
