[v12-engine] v12 sitting for 10 years, turn manually or crank, oil filter?

S3 1980 Daimler double six with HE head, has been sitting for 10
years, not one drop of oil or leak in all that time . Engine was
fully rebuilt to my understanding prior to purchase, but I only
had it running breifly.
I thought I would turn the engine over manualy , but there is NO
way that I can see to do that from underneath the car. So I think
i will just crank it over with plugs out.
I have 2 question

  1. Im doing the oil change now and I cant see how to remove that
oil filter, do I need a special tool? Im removing the exhaust down
pipe near it to make some room. Advice anyone.
  2. Im concerned that there is no oil in the bearings, oil
galleries etc Is it safe to start it up by cranking it, or is
manual turn necessary, or an oil injection in sysytem somehow
    required?
    best regards

Peter,

I would drain the oil and refill, prior to cranking. The
recommended oil is 10W-50, but may be different for your Auzzy
location. Then pull the plugs, and squirt some oil into the
cylinders, maybe 1 ounce/per cylinder, after you refresh the oil.
Let it sit a while, several hours or better even a full day.

Pull the coil wire of the dizzy, and then spin the motor over a few
seconds. Then perhaps squirt the cylinders again with oil, and
respin the engine. Refit the plugs, wires, etc, and see it it
starts.

I would also get what I call a bug sprayer from a garden supply
outfit. With my rebuild I filled the sprayer up with oil and fit it
to the oil pressure sender fitting and pre-pressurized the engine.
It was very comforting to see the oil oozing out of the crank
bearings before starting. Cheap insurance vs. a spun bearing!–

I have also done the same as Mark and can confirm that the
insecticide sprayer works well. If you hook up a meter to the oil
pressure switch, it also confirms that after a few squirts, there
is enough oil pressure in the gallery/cams to extinguish the oil
pressure light.

ok fellas I will try this with the insect sprayer. I happen to
have one laying around.
Where do I locate the oil pressure sender on the engine? Is it
easy to get to. Not much is on this engine !!

I only know V 12 ‘‘E’’, it’s located just behind the throttle
pedestal at the rear of the engine. You will see the oil lines
leading to the cams and to the engine gallery. On mine the oil
pressure sender is the larger of the two senders, one is for the
idiot light and the sender I’m using is yellow cad in color. You
could use either, I used the pressure sender cause I had a fitting
that would work with my bug sprayer.–
