[v12-engine] :( woes

My headgasket has gone on my V12 HE 1985 and have been
quoted 40-50 hours work at 45 an hour by a local jag
specialist.

So at 1800-2000 just for the labour without parts (I would
of liked to replace the water pump/hoses/radiator I am
thinking about scrapping the car.

Anyone here know any non out of this world prices for a
headgasket change as I dont have the tools to do it myself.–

Well, for that sort of money, you should be able to buy a reasonable set to
start with…

Where are you in the UK? I did the job on my DD6 for about
100,which included making special plates to lift heads with. Its
not easy if the heads are really stuck, which they usually are.Dennis–

Further to my last post I checked latest head gasket set price and
it is now 99.30 at David Manners. This should get you mostly what
you need for the job.Obviously there will be extras like antifreeze
etc.but the main thing is time to do the job.Dennis.–

If you go to ‘search forums’ and select ‘v12’ and put in ‘head
removal’ you will have at least 200 entries to select from…been
covered a lot
The guy that did my engine wore himself and lost his enthusiasm in
spending three weeks on that job!
Would take a day if you follow all the advice…

What makes him say the head gasket has gone? I thought mine had gone, but it
was a cooling system problem. I think others here have had similar.

If I were you, I’d get a second opinion (or more) and maybe get a pressure
test done on the cooling system.

The cooling system builds pressure fast, I think there is a
leak from the water pump which I was going to replace and
there is a steady stream of coolant from one exhaust and the
obvious coolant vanishing.–

Use some of the money that the shop would charge and buy the tools
and supplies for the job. You’ll have the tools afterward, the
satisfaction of doing the job yourself and still have a few pounds
left over.

You need a place to work on it. You need a torque wrench, a set of
wrenches, sorry… spanners, a socket set and the usual normal
tools. You’ll need the gasket set which should have everything for
the job. You’ll need some cleaning supplies.

You’ll want the cam indexing tool and probably the lifting plates
or similar.

Would be nice to have the timing chain tensioner tool and the cam
sprocket retainers. I like to have the heads rebuilt while they’re
off, but it’s not mandatory - like I said, would be nice.

I had worked on a few engines in the past, but never a Jag V12. I
found it wasn’t too hard using all the information on this site,
Kirby’s book and the factory manuals.–

Hi You are welcome to borrow lifting plates if you can get them
picked up.they use the cam shaft bearing bolts and then a bolt
lines up with the head bolts the plates arent threaded like the
very expensive ones but I use a nut under the plate which when the
bolt goes through the nut it puts pressure under the plate with the
nut.Hope you can follow that !The most akward nuts to undo need a
crows foot spanner because the head casting is in the way of a
normal socket Its not easy in my case it took several days to
remove heads as bolts were firmly stuck to head casting. But it came
up very slowly a bit at a time.I live in mid Wales by the way.Dennis–

Im just doing a top and front end rebuild for the first time
on any car, let alone this V12. My resources are only this
forum, the Kirby book and the JDHT manuals. All the
specialty tools to this point can be fabricated, just ring
around sheet metal places to purchase offcuts cheaply, and
can be made with an angle grinder and drilling. Use at least
8mm thick steel plate for the lifting plates, and nice long
350mm steel rod, as thick as you can get away with sitting
on the head studs. And finally about 1.5mm steel plate to
hold the sprockets to the carrier.–
