V12 Water Pump Setscrew

Hello Folks,
Just changing the water pump on my V12 and there is a small locknut and setscrew on the pump body. Just wondered if it was possible to remove it and inject some HMP grease before installing the pump? Any advice on this and on adjusting the setscrew appreciated. Thanx in anticipation… Charlie.

No, the bearing is a sealed unit. That screw helps retain the bearing cartridge.

Actually, it depends. On the OEM bearing, there was a hole in the cartridge under that setscrew so you could install a zerk fitting and pump in some grease. Whether or not that was ever a good idea is a subject for discussion. AFAIK, though, none of the replacement bearings have that hole, so you couldn’t grease it if you wanted to.

Honestly, I don’t think the hole in the OEM bearing cartridge was intended for greasing. I think it was intended for a pin on the tip of the setscrew to fit into, thereby ensuring the cartridge could not move within the housing. The fact that this cartridge is installed in an aluminum housing – as opposed to the cast iron housings typical of Chevy water pumps – was perhaps of some concern at Jaguar.

Many thanx for the prompt and informative reply. Will carry on with the installation of the new pump~i’d forgotten what a tedious job it is. I’ve discovered that during the pump removal process if you remove the 2 long studs on the extreme RHS of the pump you dont have to remove the fan and the idler assy to get the forward clearance to remove the pump but have the feeling that you’re probably aware of this. Rgds.

Kirbert,

If we’re talking about little hole present in the housing of most old fashion water pumps (located in the lowest section of the bearing) - these were made to allow two things. First - factory inspection/testing. Second - drain of any leaked coolant to preserve bearing from damage, often at break-in stage of the assembly (drain instead of washing the bearing). I haven’t heard about pump greasing idea, ever.

Another thing is the fact tha you’re able to see when the pump is due for replacement…

We’re not. We’re talking about a hole in the bearing cartridge itself.

Hello again,
I’ve hit a snag on removing the old pump in that there’s a countersunk centering screw thats difficult to access and i cant see exactly if its a Torx or Cross screw. Can anyone advise from experience what bit to use to remove it~scared of using the wrong bit and stripping it. Tks.

#4 cross

I replaced the one in my car with a countersunk stainless allen head so I could hang onto the thing.

It’s either a size 3 or 4 pozidrive head, can’t remember which. Looks like a Phillips head, but a Phillips will round it out. Get the proper pozidrive bit.

I’m betting it’s a size 3 Pozidriv. The size 4 is a great big thing, like those used on the diagonal struts under the hood.

That’s good news because it’s a lot easier to find a #3 than a #4.

I think you are right about the #3 pozidrive. If the OP lives in the US, he can get a cheap Harbor Freight bit set that has #3, as well as 0, 1, and 2 pozidrive hex bits. #4 bit I had to order from Amazon.

Good news is i got it out. Had to make up a driver with a sawn off 1/4 rachet and a #3 Pozi. What a relief when it broke away; fortunately not overtorqued. Think I’ll replace it with an Allen screw. Many thanx for the responses. Rgds.

Charlie,

Here’s the screw I bought to replace that one: McMaster-Carr

Many thanx. Its identical to one i got on Ebay. Should be easier to extract next time. Rgds. Charlie.

IMHO, Pozi is better than Allen. The only thing I’d prefer over Pozi is Torx. And of course, I’d prefer better metal, either alloy or stainless. And I’d install it with anti-seize.
