Vacum advance screw. How to use it?

When do I need to fiddle with this alu looking screw?
Fine tuning of the distributor perhaps…

In a word yes, coarse setting of the distributor by turning the unit then you can get to the optimum point with the knurled nut.

You might find that it’s seized from lack of use
Make sure it moves and don’t force it ,liquid wrench and some detailing
Cheers

I seem to recall that I got a 150 to run better by turning it a few clicks. That engine was later rebuilt, but the issue was bad response to my right foot on the throttle, esp before reaching working temp. I remember exactly where I was on the minor roads in the area inthe countryside where I live. Easy to stop, open the bonnet and adjust the screw… try again, etc.
How many clicks from one end to the other?

The xj manual allows six clicks each way once timing is set, it’s just a fine by ear adjustment.

I found it in the carś Blue book. In July 2015, I turned it 4 clicks to A. Is that clockwise?
The result was quite noticeable on acceleration from standstill or slow speed. The hesitancy to a clear acceleration disappeared. It was not a misfiring issue, and the SUs had correct needles and the mixture was good.
